Green Meetings In Hawaii
June 4th MPI Aloha Chapter Educational Luncheon
By:  Frank Robinson

The June luncheon was a day of great learning and gentle reminders of how great it is to live in Hawaii!  It was held at the lovely Hyatt Regency Waikiki in a ballroom over looking the ocean. The Hyatt, who has won awards for its efforts to be environmentally friendly and done much to embrace being green served a fantastic menu! Those of you who attended this luncheon “in person” were able to take part in the environmentally friendly tradeshow prior to lunch. Volunteers from the community organizations and “green” corporations showcased  a myriad of products, technologies and services available to all that focused on sustainability and protecting our natural resources here in Hawaii . These organizations will be featured on the MPI Aloha Chapter web site soon!

Our featured guest speaker was Ms. Tamara Kennedy-Hill, Executive Director for the Green Meeting Industry Council. Tamara is one of the country’s leading specialists in helping organizations throughout the country promote greener meetings and practices. With over ten years of experience in the hospitality and meetings industry, Tamara, along with the Green Meetings Industry Council, strives to engage the global meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition (MICE) industry towards sustainable best practices. The program focused on ways that meeting & event planners could ensure that steps were being taken by their hospitality partners to ensure a green meeting. Tamara also explained the ways that the hospitality partners could anticipate, meet and exceed those expectations, reviewing the resources available to all through The Green Meeting Industry Council. The realization that these expectations were becoming more global was evident and the need for all parties to embrace them more prevalent than ever.

The meeting was also a huge first for MPI Aloha Chapter, due in part to a grant from the MPI Foundation that allowed us to partner with Techniques Hawaii and broadcast the meeting to our members on the neighbor islands for the first time ever! This allowed those on the neighbor islands to watch and participate in the event and showcase yet another way to lessen our carbon footprint at the same time.

I think we all learned that helping our meetings “go green” was easier then we thought and had vast benefits to all – MAHALO to our education committee for such a great event!
