President's Message

Aloha kakou,

I hope 2008 has been a prosperous one so far for each one of our Aloha Chapter members.

We ended 2007 by holding a successful fundraiser for the Lokahi organization during the PRIME conference. Meeting planners and suppliers who attended PRIME 2007 were given the opportunity to purchase unique Hawaiian designed Christmas ornaments. The Aloha Chapter is honored to have the opportunity to benefit Lokahi this year. Mahalo to Adele Tasaka, Director Community Outreach and her committee for leading this effort.

Our delegation of Aloha Chapter members traveled to Houston, Texas in February to experience the MPI Professional Educational Conference - North America (PEC-NA), whose theme Meet Different created an innovative and interactive atmosphere. This new approach by MPI helped to stimulate learning and connecting in an "un-conference" way. The MPI Learning Village, which consisted of two "streets" named "Technology Way" and "Un-conference Boulevard" encouraged attendees to wander the streets to join in on the conversations and discussions on a number of topics as well as play with the different technologies in the Technology Playgrounds. For the expo, MPI thought outside the booth and tossed out the conventional tradeshow booth set up. The new expo was a much more open environment, creating a welcoming and inviting space for planners and exhibitors to actively engage in conversation. All of us in the Hawai‘i area benefited from the new design, connecting with existing and new customers and ultimately generating a number of leads for our islands.

Members and guests who attended our educational luncheon in January at the Sheraton Waikiki were wowed by both the innovative luncheon presented by the Sheraton Waikiki and interactive session presented by our featured speaker Theresa Syer. Theresa engaged the audience with exercises and activities associated with her "Maximizing Your Networking Skills" presentation. Her dynamic presentation style created an enthusiastic and high powered atmosphere for our members and guests. I am happy to share with you that Theresa has the good fortune of having future business here to the islands. For more information on her company, Hospitality Solutions, please visit www.hsolutions.ca. Mahalo to the Sheraton Waikiki for providing a unique luncheon buffet menu featuring their new poolside restaurant "Ingredients".

Be sure to register for our next educational luncheon to be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Hilton Prince Kuhio Hotel featuring speaker Neil Pflum whose presentation "Success Secrets of Donald Trump, Ghandi, and Duke Kahanamoku" will be one you won’t want to miss. Your Aloha Chapter Board of Directors has been hard at work for you, our members. A mid-year retreat was held in January at the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau (HVCB) Boardroom where we came together as a group to evaluate and discuss our strategic plans, ensuring that they are in alignment with MPI's new vision and strategic imperatives. We hope that the educational and networking events presented to you as well as those that we have planned for you, such as our first Awards Gala have been beneficial. Becoming a community and working together in Lokahi and with Aloha is an important strategic imperative for our Chapter. To that end, we secured presenter Ka‘ala Souza who involved the group with his Lokahi, Strengthening the Body in Unity, Balance, & Harmony workshop. I attended Ka‘ala's Lokahi workshop that he presented on Kaua‘i last summer and was impressed by his illustration of teamwork, relating it to an outrigger canoe team and knew then that it was the perfect workshop for our team. For more information on Ka‘ala Souza, please visit his website, www.kaala.com. We ended the day with a team building activity at Ala Moana Beach Park. The team was immersed in the Hawaiian culture by making their own ipu, from carefully selecting his/her own gourd, to taking it to the ocean to gently cleanse it, to sanding and polishing it. Mahalo to Island Partners Hawai‘i for generously sponsoring this unique and cultural activity, www.island partnershawaii.com. A special mahalo nui loa to our Chapter Business Manager, Holly Duckworth-Horning who traveled from Portland, Oregon to facilitate our retreat and share important updates from MPI Headquarters. She is happy to report that her ipu made it home safely! Include image of Edie and Holly #

We also welcomed 6 new members to the Aloha Chapter. Click here to read about the newest members of our ‘ohana and please extend your aloha when you see them at our next event.

Mahalo to all the members who are volunteering their time to serve on a committee. The success of the chapter all revolves around the work and commitment of our members. Click here to see how you can become involved.

Lastly, congratulations to our board members Karen Yonemoto, VP Administration, on her new position as Group & Retail Sales Manager with Castle Resorts & Hotels and Candace Yuen, VP Finance, on her new position as Senior Sales Manager with ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel.

Let's continue our work together to build a strong chapter, with all of us working together, with Aloha and Lokahi.

With warmest aloha,
